Sunderland (Mehitable) is born in New Hampshire.
March 8, 1807
Mehitable Sunderland marries abolitionist newspaperman Le Roy Sunderland and became involved in the Underground Railway, then moves Boston in 1857 to live with her daughter and becomes the first doctor in Hyde Park. She subsequently builds 16 houses in the Williams Avenue area, renting some to African-Americans because of “the difficulties they faced in obtaining suitable housing,” according to Elizabeth Freeman. Sunderland moves in with her granddaughter at 60 Central Avenue and becomes Hyde Park’s oldest resident before her death on August 16, 1901.
